How Thoughts Create Your Reality

Updated: Sep 14, 2018

“Thoughts Become Things.”

Whether or not you believe in the metaphysical concept that your thoughts actually bring things into being, simply by being thought, those thoughts are indeed creating the reality that you live it. Your thoughts can, and do, affect your life.

I’ve noticed how often we walk around talking about all the things that aren’t going the way we’d like them to. I’m certainly guilty of this. I spent years doing this…creating this pattern of thinking thoughts that don’t reflect the type of reality I’d like to live in. My go to pattern, especially during the dark winters of the Pacific Northwest, had been to wake up thinking, “I don’t want to get up. I’m tired. My back hurts. I don’t want to work today. Ugh…blah, blah, blah” and so on.

When I finally had the "light bulb above the head" moment and realized what I'd been doing to myself, I flipped the script. I’ve since made a concerted effort to completely change my thought patterns. The effect has been nothing short of amazing. My thoughts are still far from perfect. I’m just getting better at catching myself in my negative thought patterns. When I catch myself, I stop and re-think what I’m saying. What I’ve learned is that we can think ourselves into a whole new way of being.

What we surround ourselves with becomes our reality. If we eat junk all day, we feel like crap. If we are sedentary and don’t take time to move our bodies, we become more sluggish. If we think negative or self defeating thoughts all day long, day after day, we live more and more deeply into those thoughts. They do indeed become our reality.

I’ve been amazed at how quickly the change in my thought pattern has affected my daily life. I might still wake up grumpy, with the natural inclination to think the thoughts I'd been thinking for most of my mornings for years on end. The difference is that I’m stopping myself and putting new thoughts out there.

Give this a try…even if you’re not quite on board yet. When you wake up in the morning, think, “I’m grateful to be alive. I’m excited for all of the beauty that will come into my life today. I’m excited to create something new. I have so much to share with the world”. All day long, when you find yourself going down the negative thought rabbit hole, stop yourself, and re-think. What is it that you want your day to be like? Think those thoughts. Say it to yourself repeatedly.

Next, remember gratitude. Find three new things to be grateful for every day. You’ll be suprised how many blessings you’re surrounded by. Even if you feel like you’re forcing it and not quite feeling it to your core, thinking about the things you’re grateful for reprograms your mind. It brings you up to another level of being, where far more joy resides. The simple act of thinking thoughts of gratitude can be life changing.

Finally, thoughout the day, allow yourself to notice. Notice the way the light hits the leaves on a tree. Notice the scent of the spring daphnes in bloom or of coffee brewing. Notice the people you pass on the street and give them eye contact and a smile. Notice the kindness and goodness in people. Notice how soft and sweet your cat or dog is. You can’t help thinking about beauty when you’re noticing it, and you can’t help but feel a bit more joy.

You will find your life will start to change. Your thoughts really do begin to create a new reality around you. You really can create the life you want by thinking it. Our thoughts make up our inner dialogue. They affect our mood. They affect the way we interact with others. They affect the choices we make in each moment. The affect our productivity and our enjoyment of life.

Thoughts become reality simply by being thought. We live inside of our own minds, surrounded by the thoughts we choose to think. This is a choice. It’s not always easy, but it’s most definitely something that we have a great deal of control over.
